Officer Suspended, Others Could Be Fired in Brutality Case

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - One Prince George's County police officer has been suspended and several others could be fired after a video surfaced showing a group of officers beating a University of Maryland student during a celebration when Maryland defeated Duke at the Comcast Center.

(my comments in red) I have seen a video of a man released from being detained by a police officer, who was trying to walk away, past very little room the cop allowed for him to walk through, and so he accidentally brushed up against the officer. This man was arrested for "assaulting a police officer", for simply brushing against him. Yet, if you are a Police officer, or 20, and you brutally beat a person, to near death, you simply get fired - at the most. And since they realize this, they continue to beat innocent people and walk away unpunished.

Prince George's County Police Chief Roberto Hylton is taking a hard look at what happened on Knox Road on March 3. He says the officers involved were wrong.

Investigators are working to identify other officers involved in the incident.

Video obtained by ABC 7 News appears to support a University of Maryland student's claim that he was attacked -- unprovoked -- by Prince George's County police during the civil disturbance that followed the Terps' victory over Duke last month, ABC 7 reports.

Remember people, video cameras are going to be the only defense we have against these Brutish Thugs.

Carry them with you, use them, you have every right to film a police officer in a public place. Do not let them intimidate you and tell you it is against the law to film police officers, it is Not.

In the video, John McKenna first appears skipping down the sidewalk next to Knox Road. He is singing a cheer, celebrating Maryland's basketball win over Duke on the night of March 3, 2010.

McKenna stops when he comes face to face with a Prince George's Maryland National Capital Park Police mounted officer. Note that McKenna actually backs away from the mounted officer.

The tape shows two police officers, on foot and in riot gear, slam McKenna into the wall. McKenna was knocked unconscious, his attorney, Chris Griffiths said. McKenna falls to the ground, and is struck more than a dozen times by Prince George's County police officers.

Griffiths says there is only one way to characterize what happened.

"This is police brutality pure and simple," said Griffiths, who plans to file a civil lawsuit against police on McKenna's behalf.

The police officers in this video need to be locked in prison for attempted manslaughter, not fired or suspended without pay, which is the usual "punishment" for these thugs.

Griffiths says the beating is only half the story. This is the sworn statement of charges against McKenna by the police alleges assault on a police officer and disorderly conduct. It claims McKenna "struck those officers and their horses causing minor injuries," and that McKenna was "kicked by the horses and sustained minor injuries."

The video does not support either of the police claims.

Ah, video cameras save the day, tell the truth and point out the lies of the police.

McKenna suffered a heawound requiring multiple staples. The injuries to his body match the pattern of the police batons -- not horses hooves

"Clearly the charging document is a lie," said Chris Griffiths. "As your can see from the tape, there is not a single fact in that document which is true."

The county prosecutor dropped the charges against McKenna on Monday.

We showed the video and charging document to Prince George's County Police Major Andy Ellis. He says the police internal affairs office will begin an immediate investigation."There are things in that video that concern me ... and we're going to take a look at it," Major Ellis said. "Chief (Roberto) Hylton will not condone excessive force in this case or any other case."Prince George's County's police chief has seen the video. Chief Roberto Hilton told us, "I'll tell you that I was outraged. I was very disappointed at the conduct that I saw on the part of my officers on the video tape."Hylton says one officer who's been identified so far will be suspended and stripped of his police powers.

After an investigation, he says other officers involved will likely be fired.

In a statement Monday night, the McKenna family responded to the police violence saying, "Some of these characters ought to go to jail…Some ought to merely be booted off the force, and the remainder should be properly trained to discover that force is not always necessary, and brutality is always wrong."Jack McKenna was left with multiple contusions and a gash to his skull. But according to the sworn statement of charges by police, the injuries were caused by horses. The report claims McKenna incited a crowd and assaulted the officers.

The video clearly shows the accusations made by the guilty police officers to be absolutely untrue, making their sworn statements false and adding proof that these cops are merely thugs who need to be locked inside of a cage, Poetic Justice.

Although Prince George's State Attorney Glen Ivey acknowledges the video tells a compelling and contradictory story, he told us, "I definitely think there are the grounds for an investigation and the video. I don't want to pre-judge it, but I think it's very powerful, no question about that."

The McKennas say while they are pleased Prince George's County police are launching an investigation. They are also looking at filing a criminal or civil lawsuit in this case.Federal investigators will also be looking at the tape to determine if civil rights violations occurred, and county prosecutors may pursue assault charges when the officers involved are identified."I think what you had was a situation where they were going pick a few people out of the crowd and make examples of them in front of the students and that's what they did," Griffiths said. "Then they took the extra step of covering up their misconduct by falsely charging."

They were planning to show their brutish power over the common serfs they think we are, but they were caught on camera and outed as the true criminals they are.

University of Maryland senior Marcos Hernandez was near Route 1 when the crowd became unruly after the game. He claims to have seen several incidences of police brutality."I saw at least five of them," Hernandez told ABC 7 News. "I saw girls get hit from behind with the baton--like the standard riot push with the baton," he added.Many students were shocked by the video. Ben Wilkoff, a bouncer at a College Park bar, says he empathizes with police -- but only to an extent."There are limits," Wilkoff said. "I mean, we have rules when we're bouncing. You don't cross a certain line. This looks like it would be crossing said line."Some said the video provides another negative image of both the Prince George's County Police Department, and the university."Bringing all the horses in and seeing all these attacks, it's just bad for like the image of Maryland," said Jae Kim, a junior.The Prince George's County police department emerged from federal oversight only 14 months ago. The Justice Department had monitored the police force after numerous complaints about unnecessary force.Prince George's County police arrested 28 people during the civil unrest that followed the basketball game, including 23 students.Officers say they were pelted with snow and ice balls. One officer reported being punched in the face. People were caught uprooting road signs and three small fire appeared.An estimated 1,500 people occupied Route 1, blocking traffic.

Yea, I am sure what the police are claiming is true, the same way the sworn statements of John McKenna attacking the police first are, right. How could you even get close enough to punch a cop in the face (through is riot mask no less) as you can obviously see in the video, that before getting within 5 feet of a cop you have a dozen of them attacking you, they are trained liars. I hope all involved burn for their crimes, but knowing our system I am sure they will all walk away, losing nothing but their jobs, if that.

Every time Ron Paul speaks I am just amazed, I listen to him and I try to wonder how anyone could disagree with what he is saying. Ron Paul is spot on about everything he says in this video. It is intellectual dishonesty to disagree with what he is saying. Anyone who watched this video and does not agree with or at the very least, understand what he is saying, you have to be lying to yourself. There is no other way around that fact. If you are a neo-con or status-quo Republican and disagree with Ron Paul, then you disagree too, with Thomas Jefferson. If you are a neo-Liberal and disagree with Ron Paul, then you need to look up the classical definition of the word Liberal. If you truly want freedom and liberty in this country and the world around us, there is no way you disagree with what Ron Paul says. If you consider yourself to have any amount of common sense, intelligence or knowledge you simply have to agree with what Ron Paul says. Otherwise, like I said earlier, you are lying to yourself. The only way, outside of being completely ignorant and or plain stupid, for a person to disagree with Ron Paul, is if you have absolutely no faith in people or yourself and think that you need a handler to decide what is right and wrong, which would be communism. Congressman Ron Paul Talks Foreign Policy: New Face, Same Policy

Kathleen Wells: As a member of the U. S. House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee, what is your take on this issue of torture?

Congressman Ron Paul: Well, it's against the law - both our law and international law. So, we shouldn't do it. And I'm against it for personal, moral reasons. I think it's horrible. And for practical reasons, I think it's absolutely worthless. And if we are serious about getting information, if we use other techniques, we actually get more information.

Kathleen Wells: So, you do believe that we were committing torture in our interrogations in Guantanamo?

Congressman Ron Paul: I don't think the pictures I've seen were fictitious - the ones that were released a year or two ago. And, obviously, there are some more pictures of torture that they draw more attention to because they refuse to release them, which means that it must be a true indictment of what they were doing.

Kathleen Wells: What are your thoughts on President Obama's decision to release the torture memos?

Congressman Ron Paul: I think he is purely political. I think he has backed down on what he said. He was elected for change and it is the same old stuff and he is as much of a neo-con now as Bush was with this issue and other issues. The war has been expanded. He continues with not closing down Guantanamo. There is probably, for as most [sic] as we can tell, there is still secret rendition going on. We just moved some of this process overseas. We are not going to be aware of it in detail.

Kathleen Wells: You feel President Obama is a neo-con like Bush? You don't see a distinction between the two administrations?

Congressman Ron Paul: The tone is different, but the policies don't change. We are spreading the war. The war is expanding. We are not prosecuting those that committed torture. Guantanamo is not going to be closed down. So, no, I don't see [a distinction between Bush and Obama].

He [Obama] increased the DOD [Department of Defense] budget. We surely could spend some of that money at home where people are really hurting. But we increased the DOD budget, I think, by 10-percent. I can't see any significant change in foreign policy. The pretense in leaving Iraq was a mild pretense and I'm predicting that's not going to happen. There are going to be troops in Iraq throughout this administration, I'm convinced.

Kathleen Wells: Why are you convinced?

Congressman Ron Paul: Because I don't think anyone wants to face the difficulties that might ensue. The problems came from us being there and when we leave, the problems will probably accelerate a bit. And then they will blame leaving for [causing] the problems and, yet, the real problem was going in. So, I think the international pressure that we get from various allies will be so great that we won't leave. And just don't expect the policies to change.

It just goes along with what I have said for years. Foreign policy does not change with Republicans or Democrats. Overall, there is very little policy that changes. There is a lot of debate and a lot of rhetoric, but things continue as they do.

When Clinton was in, the Republicans condemned his Somalia problem. Bush said he wasn't going to be a nation builder and a policeman of the world and he gets in and he is worse. Obama says Bush is terrible and gets in and all of a sudden, guess who is cheering Obama on right now? People like [Senator] Lindsay Graham. The real hawks of the Republican Party are sorta enjoying this right now. They figure they are winning these fights.

Kathleen Wells: Can you give me your thoughts on former Vice President Dick Cheney's recent speech on interrogation techniques and national security?

Congressman Ron Paul: I [didn't] expect anything brand new. He ... just [tried] to defend what he had been doing and his involvement over the years. He'll keep saying that he saved many lives by torturing - which I don't believe for a minute.

I'm more likely to believe Matthew Alexander and his position on torture. Matthew Alexander was an official that was involved. He was in the Air Force, but he was over there and he carried out over 300 interrogations over there and was very, very successful. But [he] refused orders to ever participate in anything violent or anything that hinted of torture. That is the evidence - you can get more information, rather than less [without using torture].

I think the evidence is now coming out of people saying that the torture wasn't intended to get information. They got a lot of information from these individuals - these few, these three that are well known now. They got a lot of information from them before they were tortured. They were trying to get them to say that there was a connection between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein in order to justify this illegal war.

Kathleen Wells: Elaborate on why you believe there is no difference between the Obama Administration and the Bush Administration?

Congressmen Ron Paul: In style, they are different. The tone is different and I think there is a benefit to that. But his policies don't change. Ultimately, policies win out. The strong statements against Iran are still there. And, right now, going through our committee (the Congressional International Relations Committee/the Foreign Affairs Committee), stronger sanctions will be put on Iran - just looking for another fight. And we have taken the position we will not allow them to proceed on any nuclear testing, even if it is within the law and even if it is done peacefully. We are not going to permit that. So no, that position hasn't changed.

Like I said before, the war is not winding down in Iraq. The violence is increasing. And war is expanding into Afghanistan, sending more troops there. And now we are taking on Pakistan. And, actually, the whole Pakistan thing is just a reflection of a very, very flawed foreign policy of ours. Because we chase the Taliban around and some go into Pakistan and we urge the public government there to do this and that, we are just working very hard to have another war in Pakistan.

Kathleen Wells: What would you be doing differently if you were President? I know you were a Presidential primary candidate.

Congressman Ron Paul: I would bring the troops home. I'd just bring them all home. I'd bring them home from Korea. I'd bring them home from Germany. Save hundreds of billions of dollars and that would be a real boost. In order to stimulate the economy, I would immediately suspend the income tax for everybody.

The money we get into the hands of the people - that would cost less money than these hundreds of billions of dollars of bailouts that go into the pockets of the privileged who then get to take their retirement benefits and all their bonuses. I would do it a lot differently.

Foreign policy, though, would be the big thing. Just move away from that. Take off the sanctions and start trading with Cuba. Not just talk about it, but go ahead and do it.

Kathleen Wells: And Iran?

Congressman Ron Paul: I would treat them like we treated the Soviets. We talked to them. The Soviets had 30,000 nuclear weapons. Iran is not going to bomb anybody. They deserve a little bit of protection for themselves. They have nuclear weapons to the north, to the south, to the east, and to the west and all they do is get beat up. There are a bunch of bad people over there, but there are a bunch of bad people all over the world.

Khrushchev wasn't exactly the nicest guy in the world and he claimed he was going to bury us, too. Even guys like Ronald Reagan talked to him and we worked things out. Their economic system collapsed.

What we ought to do is pay more attention to the goals of Osama Bin Laden. Wow! This is incredible. My jaw was dropped the entire time watching this video. The elephant paints itself holding a flower, how beautiful is that?! Then to end it all, s/he paints the ground. Look at the precision and the steadiness in the line work. I would love to own this painting. Well after watching this, I am so much more glad that I am no longer a meat eater. Any one that would eat another living being, something that could truly be full of creativity, well that is just down right disgusting to me.

Today, January 19th, Is Martin Luther King's birthday, A Great day to celebrate a great man. Tomorrow, the 20th is the inauguration of the next U.S. President, Barak Obama. For some reason, the fact that these two dates fall next to each other, and also because they are both black men, Obama is being compared to Dr. King. This comparison couldn't be further from the truth. Martin Luther King was AGAINST the Vietnam War AND Americas Foreign Policy; On the other hand, Obama wants to increase the War in Afghanistan and build larger the Military Industrial Complex. This simple fact alone is enough to erase ANY comparison's of these two men. In my opinion Dr. King would NOT be for an Expansion of the Militarization of the United States, nor would he be in favor of a troop surge into this war. The historic inauguration of a black man to the office of President, does NOT elevate Obama to the Level of Dr. King!

Jeff Monson charged with mischief; ESPN not an accomplice

Jeff Monson is either really dumb or really smart. I'm leaning towards the latter.

The fighter, who last appeared in the Mixed Fighting Alliance, winning over Ricco Rodriguez in December, has a warrant against him for defacing the Capitol building in Olympia, Wash. This warrant was issued after pictures of him painting an anarchist symbol on the building appeared in ESPN the Magazine.

See, Monson is an outspoken anarchist. He has said many times that he wants to do away with the social hierarchies that govern our world. The best way for Monson to share these theories is through the mass media, so publicity is his friend.

Is Monson so dumb that he would expect ESPN to not use photographs of him committing a crime? Of course not. This is a man with a Master's degree in psychology. He understands the ramifications of civil disobedience. If he didn't want attention brought to his cause, he would have asked ESPN to photograph him sitting at home, enjoying dinner.

Monson was charged with first-degree malicious mischief, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of a $20,000 fine and 10 years in prison. ESPN did not do him a favor by running that picture, but it's not their job to protect athletes. It's their job to cover them, a fact which Monson has used to make sure that everyone is discussing his cause today.

So today I went to a Regional Mass Protest in L.A. in defense of GAZA and the humanitarian war crimes they are facing from the Israeli occupation. There were thousands of protestors in attendance and while I was looking for parking near the Federal Building on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, I had noticed a line of Homeland Security vehicles, and I decided I wanted to snap a few cell phone pictures of them. After I eventually found parking and I was making my way towards the protest, I went and took three pictures of the Homeland Security symbols on the truck. While walking back towards the rally, a female Sheriff named, what I think was Funes, came up to me and asked for my identification and what I was doing. I asked why I was being stopped and that I don’t need to tell her anything, that I know my rights. The next thing I knew there were 5 more Sheriffs surrounding me. At that point Funes put my arms behind my back and I thought I was about to be cuffed. Instead she interlocked my fingers and proceeded to pat me down, while I was encircled by 5 other sheriffs. I kept saying that I didn’t do anything wrong and that they were violating my rights. One sheriff was going through my wallet, looking for Identification, meanwhile my ID is clearly visible in an ID window inside the wallet. I said why are you going through my wallet? Another sheriff had my cell phone, the one I used to take the pictures and while I was being searched he went through my phone and deleted the three pictures I had taken, without letting me know that he was illegally going through my private property deleting said photos. I was asked if I had weapons, I answered NO and then said it is you that have the weapons, not me. I said this is a complete violation of my rights and that I should not be detained. Then they told me I was free to go, and I asked them why was I detained to begin with? They basically admitted I was profiled under “terrorist” suspicions, because little did I know taking pictures of a Homeland Security vehicle is now considered an act of “terrorism”, according to them. After they let me go, the first thing I thought was, well at least I have the pictures on my phone. But to my disbelief I saw that my photos have been deleted from my phone. I immediately thought how bad my rights, my privacy and my private property had been violated by these six L.A. Sheriffs. When they decided to detain me, they didn’t realize that I am one of the informed people, that I am aware of the Police State and that I am against it. They didn’t realize they picked on the wrong guy this time. I am not going to lie down and be executed by the PIGS. I am going to fight this. I am going to get a lawyer; I am going to get this story out in as many places as I can. I am going to let them know they do not have the authority to violate our rights, to invade our privacy and to violate our private property.

Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton found dead

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ron Asheton, the guitarist for the Stooges whose raw sound helped inspire the first generation of punk musicians, has died. He was 60.

Asheton was found at his Ann Arbor home early Tuesday morning by police officers after they were called by an associate who had not heard from him in several days, said city police Sgt. Brad Hill.

There were no signs of foul play, and the death appeared to be of natural causes, Hill said.

Asheton was a founding member of the Stooges, the influential protopunk band formed in Ann Arbor in 1967, along with his brother, Scott.

Lead singer Iggy Pop called Asheton “my best friend” in a statement Tuesday, and the band expressed shock at his death.

“For all that knew him behind the facade of Mr. Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not,” the band said in a written statement. “As a musician Ron was The Guitar God, idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him.”

Asheton’s powerful, distorted guitar on songs like “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “T.V. Eye” was a hallmark of the group’s sound. His “technically adept but also beautifully raw” style was heavily influenced by free jazz and created “beauty out of noise,” said Brian Cogan, a punk-music historian at Molloy College on New York’s Long Island.

“He invents the template for punk-rock guitar,” Cogan said. “He’s the one who allows Johnny Ramone and the guys in the Dictators to play the way they do.”

When he was named the 29th greatest guitarist of all time in 2003 by Rolling Stone, the magazine described Asheton as “the Detroit punk who made the Stooges’ music reek like a puddle of week-old biker sweat.”

After recording three albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Stooges split and Iggy Pop went on to a successful solo career. Asheton played guitar for bands including the New Order, New Race, Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival.

In 2003, Asheston reunited with the rest of the Stooges and a new album, “The Weirdness,” was released in 2007.

Russ Gibb, who owned Detroit’s legendary Grande Ballroom and gave the Stooges their first major show there in 1968, said Asheton was a gentleman in all of their dealings.

“Wherever he is today, it’s a better place because he’s there,” Gibb said Tuesday. “He was a gentleman musician. The musicland that you and I live in has lost something today and wherever musicians go, they’re better today because he’s there.”
